Penang Oncemore: Kimberly Duck and Old Friends

Friday, 14th June, 2024

Yesterday, YitPeng and I touched down in Penang with Carmen, Nadine, and their niece Ruth in tow. The first snag – the restaurant she'd meticulously planned for was booked for a private function. A minor setback, easily remedied by a detour to Kimberly Street.

Our target: the famed Kimberly Duck Kway Chap. Let me tell you, it lived up to the hype. A fantastic initiation to Penang's culinary scene, even if exhaustion gnawed at the edges of our enjoyment.

Back at The Prestige hotel, the day wasn't done. University reunions have a way of defying timetables. In walked my fellow Electrical Engineering comrades from Malaya, class of 1993. Three decades since graduation, scattered lives that once traced the lines of semiconductors and Intels, now meandered through discussions of medicine, life's elusive purpose, and, rather unexpectedly, China's space program. A wonderful, rambling catch-up before goodbyes were exchanged.

This morning, the Penang air thrums with a slow, satisfying hum. Coffee and Char Koay Teow from Ah Kok's, a short walk from the hotel, provide the perfect fuel. The Jetty Foodcourt sleeps soundly – it's a mere 8 am – but the streets are already alive with the murmur of life. Street art explodes in vibrant bursts of color, and the locals go about their day with a quiet rhythm. It's a sensory feast, and I'm savoring every bite, every sight, every stolen moment of this reunion with Penang.
