Jawath, our enthusiastic guide with a brood of five in tow (have I mentioned it already?), steered us first to Granny Q Lemak Laksa in the heart of Pulau Tikus Wet Market. The assault on the senses was glorious – a cacophony of sights, smells, and sounds that painted a vivid picture of Penang life.
Our target: the famed Laksa. Esther, the stall's proprietress, was a woman as chatty as the market itself. We learned the recipe was a legacy from her Thai grandmother, a twist on the typical Penang laksa. Apparently, it was her third sister who meticulously documented the recipe, transforming it into the stall's signature dish.
With a near-perfect Google Maps score – 4.9 with 288 reviews, no less – I couldn't resist adding my own praise. But frankly, after that laksa, everything else paled in comparison. A testament to simplicity and heritage, it was a culinary revelation that overshadowed the rest of the morning's offerings.
Shopping, of course, was another story. Carmen and Nadine, our Penang-savvy companions, revelled in the local stores. OHL Kitchen & Dining Ware and Quin Fashion became destinations in themselves, bags bulging with goodies by the time we emerged. Satiated, both in belly and spirit, we called it a good part of the morning. After all, when in Penang how could one eat only 2 breakfasts?
